Some common expressions in English:-


1) Long time no see!;- Long time no see! means ‘I have not seen you in a long time.’

Ex: Vivek: Hi Rekha, long time no see! Where have you been keeping yourself?

Rekha: My new job is pretty demanding. I’ve got to work long hours almost every day. Anyway, nice to see you Vivek.

2) I don’t mind

👉I don’t mind means ‘I have no objections’.

Ex: ‘You may go and swim in the sea. I don’t mind.’

‘I don’t mind your smoking but you have to leave the room before you light that cigarette.’

3) It’s up to you   

👉"It’s up to you" simply means "you are the one who has to make a decision".

Ex1: Vijay: Should I buy laptop? What do you think?

Ashok: It’s up to you. You’re the one who pays the bill.

Ex2: Vicky: I’m quitting my job.

Antony: What are you going to do then?

Vicky: I’m launching my own business. What do you think?

Amar: It’s up to you. You should know better than me.

4) That depends  

👉This expression is used when you cannot give a definite answer to a question.

Ex:  Hari: Do you enjoy watching films?

Mary: That depends on the kind of film I’m watching. I enjoy watching romantic comedies.

5) It’s not worth it 

👉Used for saying that the value of something does not justify the concern you are showing.

 Ex:   Celine: Should I get this coat dry-cleaned? The stain isn’t coming out.
    Jack: It isn’t worth it. I only wear it when I work in the garden.

6) That’s quite enough

👉This expression is used to ask someone to stop behaving badly.


Ex:    That’s quite enough. I don’t want any more rude remarks from you.

7) I’m in a hurry    

👉When you are in a hurry, you are not able to wait to do something because you do not have enough time.

 Ex:    I can’t wait. I’m in a hurry. I must get there in 30 minutes.

✍Note: When you are not in a hurry, either you have plenty of time on hands or you are unwilling to do something.

  Ex:   I’m in no hurry to get married. (= I am not interested in getting married at the moment.)
    Let’s discuss your plans. I’m in no hurry to leave. (= I’ve got plenty of time, so we can discuss your plans.)

8) It doesn’t matter

👉It doesn’t matter means ‘it’s not important’. It doesn’t matter to me means ‘I don’t care.’

Ex1:
John: I’m leaving you. Sona and I are getting married.

Maria: So, go ahead. Marry her if that’s what you want. It doesn’t matter to me.

Ex2:  Husband: What shall I do now?
Wife: Do whatever you like. Jump off the roof or live in the desert. It doesn’t matter to me. I just don’t care what you do.
